The Adventure24 made the list of “Things to Do in the Southeast” in the June issue of Backpacker Magazine. Someone tipped me off to this as I had no idea. Very cool! I just wish they had gotten the correct web address. They added an extra “a” so the address was written as www.cpaadventures.com instead of the correct www.cpadventures.com. But hey, wrong press is better than no press!
A little more than a month ago, there was a bear attack on Chilhowee Mountain that ended in tragedy with two injured and one fatality. Since that time, much of Chilhowee Mountain and Chilhowee Recreation Area have been closed. My source at the Forest Service aren’t sure when it’s going to reopen either. This weekend, Memorial Day weekend, is often one of the most visited weekends for the Forest Service. Many people would love for it to be open this weekend, but it looks like that isn’t going to happen since no word of its opening has occurred.
What does this have to do with adventure racing? The Adventure24 is June 10-11, 2006 and as of this moment a good portion of the Southern District of Cherokee National Forest is still closed. I’ve been in contact with the Forest Service and I’ve come up with some alternate routes to various sections should any area not be open. This is just another example of how unique adventure racing really is. I can’t recall many sporting events that had to have contingency plans for bears. I sure haven’t heard that about triathlons!
With our decision to provide custom designed waterproof/tearproof maps for both the Adventure24 and Ultra O-gaine, we had to move the final registration date of each event up a few days. These maps will be some of the best maps you have seen in any endurance event so we feel the date changes are worth it. To allow for shipping and the printing of the maps, the final registration dates for Adventure24 and Ultra O-gaine are as follows:
Adventure24: 11:59PM EST May 31st, 2006
Ultra O-gaine: 11:59PM EST June 25th, 2006
We hope to see you soon!
The USARA is starting something new this year for USARA National Championship qualifier races. The elite division winner of the race receives a USARA vest. You can check out the picture below for the exact vest the Adventure24 Adventure Race elite division winners will take home. The vest is made from a wicking material with some nice stitched logos on the front. The back has a few more logos in print. Sizes run a bit small, but I received an assortment of sizes so hopefully they will match up well with the team that wins them. Come out to Benton, TN to race in the Adventure24 and try to win your vest.
